What Is a Flap Disc? Types, Materials and Applications

FLAP DISCS: TYPES, MATERIALS AND COMMON APPLICATIONS

Flap discs are abrasive tools designed for grinding, blending and surface finishing. They consist of overlapping abrasive flaps arranged around a backing plate and are commonly used with angle grinders.
As the outer abrasive grains wear away, fresh grains are gradually exposed. This structure helps provide consistent grinding performance while producing a smoother finish than many conventional grinding wheels.
COMMON ABRASIVE MATERIALS
ALUMINUM OXIDE
Aluminum oxide flap discs are a practical and economical choice for general-purpose work. They are commonly used on carbon steel, wood and other suitable materials where standard grinding performance is required.
ZIRCONIA ALUMINA
Zirconia flap discs offer good cutting efficiency and durability. They are widely used for weld removal, edge grinding and surface preparation on carbon steel and stainless steel.
CERAMIC ABRASIVE
Ceramic flap discs are designed for demanding applications requiring fast material removal and longer service life. They are suitable for harder metals and continuous professional use.
TYPE 27 AND TYPE 29
Type 27 flap discs have a relatively flat profile. They are suitable for grinding and finishing flat surfaces, especially when used at a lower working angle.
Type 29 flap discs have a conical profile that allows more aggressive contact with the workpiece. They are commonly selected for weld grinding, edge work and faster stock removal.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT GRIT
Coarse grits, such as P40 and P60, are suitable for heavier material removal, weld grinding and rust removal. Medium grits, including P80, provide a balance between grinding and finishing. Finer grits, such as P120, are better suited to surface blending and preparation before coating or painting.
The appropriate flap disc should be selected according to the workpiece material, required finish, grinder speed and application. Always check that the disc dimensions and maximum operating speed are compatible with the machine.
ABC Hardware Tools supplies flap discs in different diameters, grit sizes, abrasive materials and backing options. Product labels, colors and packaging can be customized according to confirmed order quantities and market requirements.
