HOW DOES A SPIRIT LEVEL WORK?
Learn how a spirit level uses gravity, liquid and an air bubble to check horizontal, vertical and angled alignment accurately.

A spirit level works through the combined effects of gravity, liquid and air. Inside the tool are sealed, transparent vials that are almost completely filled with liquid, leaving a small air bubble.
Because air is lighter than liquid, the bubble always moves toward the highest point of the vial. Each vial is slightly curved and marked with two reference lines. When the spirit level is placed on a surface, the position of the bubble shows whether that surface is correctly aligned.
If the bubble rests exactly between the two lines, the surface is level in the direction being checked. If it moves to either side, one end of the surface is higher than the other and must be adjusted.
A horizontal vial checks level surfaces, while a vertical vial checks upright alignment. Some models also include a 45-degree vial for angled work.
For reliable results, place the spirit level on a clean, stable surface and view the bubble directly from above. Dirt, damage, temperature changes or a poorly calibrated vial may affect measurement accuracy.
