A Product Can Look Fine and Still Fail the Test
During a recent pre-shipment inspection, we carried out a drop test on a tape measure.
From the outside, the product still looked acceptable. However, after opening the case, we found that the internal reel had cracked during the test.
This was one of the points that failed our inspection.
It is exactly why quality control should go beyond appearance, dimensions and packaging. A tape measure is used every day on construction sites, in workshops and in other demanding environments. It may be dropped many times during its working life. If an internal component breaks too easily, the blade may no longer extend or retract properly—even when the outer case appears undamaged.
As the customer’s business partner, my role is not simply to place the order and wait for shipment. I need to look at the product from the customer’s perspective:
• Will it perform reliably in real use?
• Are the internal components strong enough?
• Does the bulk production match the approved standard?
• Can the identified problem be corrected and retested before shipment?
Finding a hidden weakness at the factory may delay shipment slightly, but finding it after the goods reach the market can lead to complaints, returns and damage to the customer’s reputation.
A good business partner does not hide problems. We find them early, communicate them clearly and work with the factory to correct them before they become the customer’s problem.
That is the real value of pre-shipment inspection.
